APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert
APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert is the flagship program of APPLAUSE! Musicals Society.
Under the Artistic Direction of Scott Ashton Swan, APPLAUSE! celebrates the rarely heard musical theatre works by important composers and lyricists. Conceived in 1997 as concert performances - or "on book" performances - APPLAUSE! presents the entire book and scores of these musicals.
Each production is a whirlwind, with just seven days of rehearsals (about 40 hours), then three performances. Most concerts are piano only but occasionally there is a small combo band.
Over the last 17 years, APPLAUSE! has presented 43 musicals in concert including works by Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Charles Strouse, Stephen Sondheim, and many others.
The casting of the concerts has a focus on recent graduates of professional musical theatre/theatre training programs.
"In a town and era where most producers play it safe with the musical warhorses, it's up to a small, semi-professional company like APPLAUSE! to go out on a limb with these shows." - Peter Birnie, Vancouver Sun
