The Cheryl Hutcherson Award
The Cheryl Hutcherson Award is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated an involvement in the arts community of the Lower Mainland, has proven ability in their craft, and plans to return to full-time post-secondary training in Canada - studying performing arts or musical theatre in or by the fall of 2024.
Cheryl Hutcherson had a great love for live performance especially musical theatre. She volunteered tirelessly “behind the scenes” helping many companies with publicity, box office, administration and general cheer leading. Her volunteer efforts were recognized when she received an OVATION Award for Outstanding Behind the Scenes work in January 2011, followed by a Mary Phillips Award for Behind the Scenes Achievement in June 2011. On July 11, 2012, Cheryl died after a long battle with cancer. Many of the arts organizations and individual artists that she supported are immeasurably richer for having known her and this award will keep her legacy of community involvement, and the encouragement and support of young theatre artists pursuing careers in the performing arts.
The award amount may change from year to year as it's dependent upon the number of awardees, as determined by the award task force & board of APPLAUSE! Musicals Society. The availability of award funds depends on the generosity of our donors, thus the pool of funds may be different each year. The amount of the award for 2025 is TBC.
