APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert is the only series in Canada that brings to life rare, shelved, forgotten musicals that have "slipped through the cracks" and are unlikely to be seen in the regular repertoire of most companies. Since 1997, audiences have enjoyed the entire book & score of nineteen such musicals with exciting, "on book", semi-staged concert versions. Unique to their work is a ONE WEEK rehearsal period, and a strong commitment to showcasing talent, accessibility, history, and education.
Stephen Sondheim to headline the 09/10 APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert Season
Scott Ashton Swan, Artistic Producer of APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert cheerfully announced the company’s 2009/2010 season which will include three rare musicals by the world’s most beloved contemporary composer-lyricist, Stephen Sondheim. The musicals areMerrily We Roll Along(1981),Passion(1994), and Follies (1971). To further highlight the APPLAUSE! season will be a very special “one night only” event entitled “A Life In The Theatre, an evening with Stephen Sondheim” where Stephen Sondheim himself will recount, stories and anecdotes from his many years in musical theatre. This special event with Stephen Sondheim will take place on Tuesday October 27, 2009 at the Vogue Theatre.
“These are Sondheim’s best shows all in one season, and I can’t think of a better way of grouping them together, except to bring the creator of these great works to our city, giving people a direct chance to hear from the creator himself.” - Scott Ashton Swan, Artistic Producer
This will be the second Broadway composer that APPLAUSE! has brought to Vancouver, the first was in 2004 when they brought Stephen Schwartz the composer of Wicked & Godspell, here during their concert production of his very rare musical The Bakers Wife. The three musicals represent three decades of Mr. Sondheim’s career from the 70’s to the 90’s. Merrily We Roll Along will also be the 34th musical in concert that APPLAUSE! has presented since its first concert production of the same musical in 1997.
